Make me a channel of your Peace

There are atrocities all around the world every day. Today they fall very close to home. There will be commentaries and condemnations, prayers and pontifications, community and comfort, sadness and despair. For now I just offer the words of a hymn – attributed to a prayer of St Francis of Assisi.

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring your love;
where there is injury, your pardon, Lord;
and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.

Refrain:
O Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope;
where there is darkness, let me bring your light;
and where there’s sadness, ever joy.

Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
in giving to all people, we receive,
and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.

In John 15:17-18 Jesus says: “This is My command to you: Love one another. If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.”
